“We should write as we dream; we should even try and write, we should all do it for ourselves, it’s very healthy, because it’s the only place where we never lie. At night we don’t lie. Now if we think that our whole lives are built on lying — they are strange buildings — we should try and write as our dreams teach us; shamelessly, fearlessly, and by facing what is inside every human being — sheer violence, disgust, terror, shit, invention, poetry. In our dreams we are criminals; we kill, and we kill with a lot of enjoyment.

Rice said. “Things have changed.”

Already Twenty Years Gone: Our 1850 Farmhouse

Reagan was alive and president, already officially forgetting,
the spring you found us the farmhouse. A rental. Forty acres.
Prelapsarian. A hundred and a quarter a month.
I landed there — Chicago-sotted, puzzled –
needing, apparently, to be a wife.
You dug an ambitious garden but did not amend the soil.
You fenced it, but the groundhogs still got in.

Bush the First ascended a mere six seasons later.
Already you were asking why I kept to the edge of the bed.
Now a wall of stones marks where the barn was.

(G) Memories of East Texas and those
(C) piney green rolling (D) hills
Covered in the (G) springtime
With (C) golden (D) daffodils
(C) Rowing on Sandy (D) Lake come April
(G) Harvesting hay in (Em) June
(C) Sitting by the road watching well fires burn
By an old October (D) moon

(C)I learned to drive on those
(D)East Texas red clay (G)backroads
And I mean to tell you my friends
They weren’t no easy roads
You had to watch out for all the curves
(G) Down by Kelsey (Em) creek
And (C) detour through the Lindsay’s pasture
When the water ran (D) too deep

Memories of East Texas
And Gilmer, county seat of Upshur
Looking back and asking myself
What the hell’d you let them break your spirit for?

too bad that the commonwealth of pa has no consistent coverage of its own dingpolitik: stuff, topoi. it’s “fascinating” to see how scaifemedia and others not only “speak for” those who might vote tomorrow; i’m sure this has happened with other states/commonwealths during this long primary season, but the lack of robust (don’t like that word: healthy? helpful? good?) local media only compounds the structural flaws of our “democractic system”. pfffffffffffffffffffffffft. i’m pretty sure i’m voting for hillary tomorrow. may job strike me dog.

Skunk Hour

by Robert Lowell

listen: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15279

For Elizabeth Bishop

Nautilus Island’s hermit
heiress still lives through winter in her Spartan cottage;
her sheep still graze above the sea.
Her son’s a bishop. Her farmer
is first selectman in our village,
she’s in her dotage.

Thirsting for
the hierarchic privacy
of Queen Victoria’s century,
she buys up all
the eyesores facing her shore,
and lets them fall.

The season’s ill–
we’ve lost our summer millionaire,
who seemed to leap from an L. L. Bean

” The visits are part of Penn State’s effort to expose students to the 2008 presidential campaign, part of the University’s open-door policy to host campaign stops during this primary season. “
